Ipamorelin was first reported in 1998 by a team at Novo Nordisk, as a member of the growth hormone secretagogue family: small synthetic peptides designed rather than found. It is five residues long, and three of the five are residues no cell makes: aminoisobutyric acid, D-2-naphthylalanine and D-phenylalanine.
Those choices are deliberate. D-amino acids and the bulky naphthyl group give the molecule a shape and a resistance to enzymatic breakdown that a natural pentapeptide would not have. The chain finishes in a C-terminal amide. Supplied as 10 mg of freeze-dried powder.
