SS-31.
SS-31 is a Szeto-Schiller peptide, named for Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller, who designed the series. It is four residues long and built on a simple, deliberate pattern: positively charged and aromatic residues in alternation, D-arginine, 2',6'-dimethyltyrosine, lysine, phenylalanine, closed with a C-terminal amide.
The dimethyltyrosine is the signature of the series, a tyrosine carrying two extra methyl groups on its ring. The result is a small molecule that is both cationic and lipophilic, an unusual combination for a peptide. Supplied freeze-dried in 10 mg and 50 mg vials.
